for SINGERS There is no such thing as teaching “style,” although I’ve heard some attempt to teach this very thing – it is counter-productive and manipulative. I create a custom program for each individual voice so that the can voice can handle any material. My techniques allow the voice to move effortlessly from pop/rock to musical theatre, country to opera. Some voices are better suited for a certain genre but I still encourage working safely outside one’s comfort zone. It is liberating and healthy for your voice – the one you sing with as well as the voice that lives deep inside you. Where you want your voice to work in the current market place might not your “true” voice. When this is the case, I identify the true voice based on my analysis during the first session. It’s very powerful to know what your true voice is from day 1 – from there, we make choices. And you do have choices. It’s just best to know what they are now as opposed to being told “wait until you’ve studied a year.” For pros, there’s always something to be learned. A professional singer should stretch both vocally and performance-wise by exploring tons of new material with custom vocal arrangements. Damage from years of wear and tear on the voice caused by incorrect singing and bad habits can be repaired. I continue to work within the medical community in cases involving post-op rehabilitation for throat surgeries and have not come across a case that is beyond hope. For beginners, you should be treated and taught like the pro you desire to be from the onset. Singing only nursery rhymes and traditional scales until “you are ready,” is, in my opinion, not a powerful approach and does not call upon the necessary passion to be great. Incorporating sophisticated material raises the bar. It is my job to make that material accessible to your voice. For recording artists, it’s paramount you break a song’s vocal down at the piano before you record it. An instrumental track dictates a certain vocal as does a vocal demo. The magic you seek in the studio happens when your vocal is first explored “unplugged.” Also, the song becomes yours on a deeper level. If you have ever been referred to as tone deaf or believe yourself to be, and in your heart of hearts do wish you could sing, you can. The pre-requisite is: you and I have to be in the same room.
