Finding a voice that makes any script sing makes you hirable, even viable for a role for which you may not be physically right. A well trained voice will compel millions. The most comprehensive way to train an actor’s voice is with singing exercises combined with speaking techniques customized for the individual. Your impulse as an actor is what sets you apart from the masses but can only set you apart when your voice can handle your impulse. Impulse is like ammunition shot from a gun – it’s that quick. If you think about it, it’s no longer an impulse. Having said that, an actor’s voice must be fully capable of handling the impulse. A voice that shakes, stammers and is inaudible is the hallmark of an untrained voice. My technique teaches you to interpret material by using your voice not your head. I’ll never tell you how to feel. I don’t have to -- your heart does that on its own when you are connected to your voice.
davidcoury's Singing For Actors TM Tapping into the student’s vocal power, this interactive course’s techniques are based in the development and maintenance of the actor’s voice. A strong emphasis on personal creativity and how that creativity serves as the incentive for impulse are at the core of the valuable insights offered by the Instructor. “How do I use this in my acting?” is always in the conversation. The actor’s application and exploration of custom vocal exercises and musical assignments will enable the voice to handle impulse. Assigned material will reflect each actor’s desire for their own voice. During this course, the actor’s vocal transformation will include making a challenging script sing as well as singing a challenging song. This class is committed to the art of storytelling and song interpretation, the ‘taking on’ of vocal challenges, the shared experience of the transformational power of music and voice, finding one’s “true voice” and, most importantly, providing the actor with tools to keep the true voice alive.
Singing For Actors II: The Art of Cabaret This comprehensive course continues to explore the communication world’s most important tool – the VOICE – while answering the paramount question for the actor: “Who am I?” For the actor/singer as storyteller, the 5-week intensive delves into mastering the art of “a cappella,” singing with an accompanist and interpreting a song. Because it is essential for the actor to sing and speak in public with confidence and conviction, this class focuses on erasing “self-imposed” pressures and culminates with a performance for an invited audience of 2 songs and an original monologue. Pre-requisite: Singing For Actors
Singing for Actors III: Characters in Song & Scene In this five-week vocal intensive the actor studies, rehearses and then performs a song/scene from a contemporary or classic musical* for an invited audience. The techniques employed in SFA I & II continuously get the actor to explore and experience the power of the authentic voice. Now, in SFA III, the actor pointedly calls upon that authentic voice to create a character’s voice and looks at the demands made on the singer in a musical. Every week, as the degree of difficulty in the vocal exercises are increased to further build technique, range and stamina, the actor is directed in how to make brave and inventive choices. Together, these exercises and choices begin to bring the character’s voice to life as the actor learns to successfully meet the challenge of transitioning effortlessly from speaking to “breaking into song.” Pre-requisite: SFA I & II and Mr. Coury's approval. *Material is assigned by Mr. Coury.
